“But we should be glad and celebrate! Your brother was dead, but he is now alive. He was lost and has now been found.” Luke 15:32
This year’s theme, “Celebrate” gave us a great opportunity to do just that and we certainly had lots to celebrate. This year we recognised and celebrated 25 years of children’s ministry through Kid’s Camp Out in the Riverina – what an achievement! God has certainly blessed this ministry over the years. Our Speaker Kristy Morgan, the Family and Children’s Pastor of Roseville Uniting Church kept us in the party spirit as she reminded us that God wants to party with us, God forgives us and God loves us. Now that was worth Celebrating!
Kids Camp Out was held at the Narrandera Racecourse on Saturday and Sunday 18th-19th March. It was attended by 70 campers in Years 3- 6 from Coleambally, Coolamon, Ariah Park, Narrandera and Wagga Wagga representing Uniting, Baptist, Christian Revival Crusade, Catholic and Fusion communities drawn from local churches and scripture classes across the Riverina. An additional 5 pre-campers, 20 Teenage helpers and 40 adult helpers made up our Kids Camp Out family for the weekend.
This year’s “creative challenge” was to make a Piñata that was broken by another small group as part of our evening celebrations. The Piñata’s were hung in our worship space. Small groups were provided with a box that needed to be put together, fillers were added as provided including an uplifting message written from one small group to another, prior to being decorated with paint and streamers.
Each of three small group times included:
Buddy Time – Time for building community within your group
Bible Time – Biblical input and some questions to ponder
Building Time – Exploring the Bible passage through questions and wondering
Bonding Time – Prayer time – bonding with God through prayer
Our worship times explored the Biblical stories of:
- Jesus at a Wedding in Cana where Jesus performed his first party miracle. John 2:1-11
- The Parable of the two sons (Forgiving Father) and the wonderful celebration and feasting that followed. Luke 15:11-32
- Jesus Appearing to two Disciples on the road to Emmaus – exploring the Easter story and our invitation to join in God’s party. Luke 24:13-35
Our guest puppeteers Paul and Bethany Davey and their friend “Rupert” shared the vision of Heaven being like a party that never ends. A jumping castle, water slide, water balloon volleyball, craft, parachute games, celebration cake, party bags, glowsticks, drama and amazing worship music completed our Celebration!
